About ten years ago, I had an opportunity to visit Oak Creek Canyon in northern Arizona. Stretching between Flagstaff and Sedona, this lush and scenic canyon is second to the Grand Canyon as an Arizona tourist destination.
That visit inspired me to read Zane Grey’s The Call of the Canyon, a western set predominantly in this region. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. I liked the story, its imagery, and social commentary of the day.
I recently hiked the Grand Canyon and made a brief side trip to Oak Creek Canyon. It’s still beautiful and heavily visited. And, to my delight, I discovered Call of the Canyon day use area in Coconino National Forest–a nice tribute to Zane Grey!
